Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumReally cannot fault the ryokan. The only possible improvement I can think off is a collecting service on arrival at the railway station
Friendly and professional service Location close to interesting areas in town but away from it all in the forest Good food

Hong KongWe stayed for 1 night a bit short. I would recommend to stay 2 nights minimum.
In the middle of Nara's country park, find a piece of heaven, disconnect from the busy world and enjoy a unique Ryokan experience. Don't expect any fancy facilites but reconnect with the nature and silence. All the staff are really nice and the food is excellent. a once in a lifetime experience, to be repeated.

AustraliaWish the check out could be a bit later instead of 10am.
The location was great, tucked away in the forest. The peace and quiet was just what we needed! Food - dinner and breakfast were traditional style, authentic, delicious, fresh and portions were generous. The private bath experience was very relaxing. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Thank you for a unique experience.

United StatesThe communication about the bath times was a little challenging but really not an issue.
The food was amazing. It was too much food for us, I would be surprised if anyone could eat it all and I felt terrible not doing so! I can tell how much care and love went into the preparation of each aspect of each dish. Maybe one or two less courses would be fine, just to not waste such precious food. Overall, no complaints though, just too much of a good thing! ;)

GibraltarThe hotel is absolutely beautiful, especially given its setting in the middle of the forest. The room itself was very spacious and exceptionally clean. The staff could not have been more kind and attentive, and the dinner that was provided was incredible. For those interested in seeing the deer, they can be found a short walk from the hotel (with some even found wandering just outside the grounds).

United KingdomThe little balcony rooms were a bit cold, as was the ensuite bathroom. We have also discovered that futons are not for us - we are definitely mattress people, but it was a great experience.
Gorgeous, peaceful setting, exceptional service. The staff were super attentive and great room amenities. Food was presented beautifully and the Bath Rooms were a complete delight.

IrelandAmazing Ryokan with the most attentive staff. Their English is very good and we felt like 5-star guests from arrival to check out and felt that our needs were always taken care of. The location is amazing, right in the heart of Nara Park. We had the pleasure of waking up to the sight of deer! We also were able to walk around the park and the main sections where the deer graze were not too far away (which was one of the reasons we chose this Ryokan in particular!). We enjoyed the onsen at night after our wonderful dinner, as well as first thing in the morning. It was very relaxing. The room itself is very large, almost like an apartment, and it is very traditional with a tatami floor. Everything from inside and outside of the venue was decorated in such a traditional and beautiful way, it really allows you to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture. Would definitely stay in this Ryokan again if we had the chance!

Saudi ArabiaThis isn't a negative, but the shower / bath isn't in the room. It's in a separate room, but in our case our room had a designated bathroom all day (so other guests wouldn't use it).
From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by the manager of the hotel and her assistant, and treated like kings throughout first showing us our rooms, and then when serving dinner in the private dinner room. If you like Kaiseki dinner, then you are in for a treat because the food is very good. They also offer vegetarian or Halal options which is excellent. The location is in the middle of a nice forest from where you can hike to the top and then get a nice view of Osaka, and it's an easy hike. We came a bit late to the hotel which unfortunately did not allow us to fully experience the Ryokan on the first day. If you come here, you can come early to Nara, leave your luggage in the lockers near the station (they are cheaper right outside than inside the station), and then walk around the deer park and to the temple (won't take more than 2 hours). Then have a meal, go to the Ryokan, take a walk around the forest, come back for a nice bath, then have your dinner, after which you can relax in your room. I feel this will give you the full experience.

United KingdomThe onsens are quite small (they fit two), aren't open air and don't have a view. They are private, family-style, though (you book a time), so they are good for those intimidated by public nudity! They were still a lovely place to relax.
This was our favourite ryokan in Japan. We loved the secluded forest setting, proximity to Nara Park, stunning traditional wooden building, forest view from our room, and the delicious dinner in a private dining room (they catered for us vegetarians well). The staff is friendly and speaks English. Our room was warm on a chilly day. Drinks in the minibar (beer, juice, water) and tea were free.

United StatesThe room and the common room have a smell that comes from musty enclosed spaces that have wall to wall carpenting. In future renovations it would be good to replace all wall to wall carpets with hardwood.
Staff were excellent. The premises are beautiful. Attention to detail was appreciated. Food was excellent. We have stayed in other high-end ryokans and this one compares with the best.

United Arab EmiratesI would not say I did not like it, but beware the little forest animals (geckos and spiders) roaming around, if you keep doors and windows closed you will enjou their sight from the massive glass windows
Great experience of traditional Japanese hospitality. The rules and times ard clearly set, but this makes for a smooth experience. The staff were very attentive to all our needs and pre emptively sorted them all out The setting in the heart of the forest, yet 2km from the city, is just a priceless disconnection that we all needed
