Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNot much to say here.
Great accommodation in the centre of town close to everything and all the onsen. Great beers available in house. View from the room was enjoyable. Very basic sleeping arrangement as per most ryokan.

The ryokan was exceptionally clean and the staff was amazingly helpful. There was a number of staff who spoke english fluently. They have their own microbrewery and you can have beer delivered to your room until 10 (if that’s your thing). The room was beautiful and clear instructions were provided for the onsens, yukata, and ryokan. While the listing says the bath for Yamamatoya is open until 12AM, we were told we could go in all night. The bath here at the ryokan was super nice and private, and had both an indoor and outdoor section.

ThailandExcellent hotel with good location. Close to almost every public onsens. The staff welcomed us very well. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your luggage and take a walk around the city. The dinner was excellent. It's worth a try. Breakfast is just a simple menu. Overall, it was a very good experience. We will definitely stay here again.

New ZealandBeds could have been a little more comfortable, but I'm nitpicking on that!
Excellent location and amenities, and staff were wonderful. In particular the onsen and facilities within was amazing. We booked the private onsen one evening which was great, but the public one was as nice and so you were only paying for the privacy. In the private onsen the tiny fridge with bottles of milk to enjoy after bathing was a cool touch.

PhilippinesCan’t think of any. I’ve read some negative reviews in Google but I guess these people who was expected way much given the price point.
Everything that Yamamotoya offered was beyond what I expected. Yes, it’s pricey compared to other types of accommodation. But be reminded that this is a ryokan, possibly family run. Even the dinner might be considered expensive but it is really a sight for the eyes and a feast for the palette. The adventure of onsen hopping is also wonderful experience for both first timers and repeaters.

Our room was incredibly spacious and looked over a gorgeous garden that was particularly peaceful on a rainy day. Everything from the rooms to the hotel onsen were incredibly clean and hygienic.

The location was pretty close to the tourist spots and kinosaki is not huge and therefore all the places were within walking distances. The staff were extremely helpful. They carried my big luggage up and down the floors even though I tried doing it by myself on the day of check out, one of the male staff noticed me and rushed over to take over. I am capable of doing it but appreciate their services. The onsen in the ryokan itself was small but still felt great.

JapanThe staff were helpful and were waiting for us to arrive. They immediately came out to help with bags and car parking. The room was very spacious and a unique experience for us. Also the location was perfect being in the center of Kinosaki. The only negative I would say was my friends snoring, but I guess that means they were sleeping well. :D

United KingdomNo complaints whatsoever.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and spoke good English. Dinner and breakfast was served in our room and each item described to us as they were laid out. Our futons were laid out and packed away by staff. The whole ryokan was kept immaculate and we heard no noise at all. Geta, yukata, umbrellas and baskets were provided for going to and from onsens. An onsen pass was also provided from check in to 3pm on the day of check out. We were allowed to keep our towels until this point and our luggage was held after check out.

AustraliaThe only thing is that the room was quite small, however this is to be expected for this type of accommodation.
This ryokan is in a great location, with lovely hosts, and delicious breakfast provided. We booked additional dinner ahead of time with the ryokan, which was also amazing. Everything was clearly explained, including how to use our spa passes in the town, and when each onsen would be available.

United StatesWe didn't love sleeping on tatami mats on the floor and would have preferred a western style bed. That said, we knew that this would be the case going in, so we weren't surprised. Each of us had three tatami mats stacked on top of another, so it was more like a very firm mattress than a yoga mat. Also, we really enjoyed the experience anyway.
We loved the private onsen on the property, the option to have dinner or breakfast in the dining room and the location. We upgraded to a room with a private bathroom, which also happened to have a balcony overlooking the canal and street. We opted to have dinner one night of our stay as it was a bit expensive, but it was very delicious. It would be a lot of food to have multiple nights in a row, so I recommend trying the other plentiful restaurant options in town during your stay. The ryokan also provided yukata (robes) and wooden sandals as well as towels and carrying baskets for visiting the various public onsen in town. During your stay you'll have a free pass for all 7 of the public onsen that lasts until 3pm the day you check out. This was also one of the largest rooms we had while in Japan, so for that alone, a ryokan is an excellent option.
