Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThere were no handicap stalls available every time we drove in to the hotel. If there are that many people needing a stall, designate more. I had to walk very far on some days. I use a cane and have a hard time walking from the far parking and Room 104- the last room on the disabled floor.
When we had issues in our room with our refrig, we were helped very quickly. What I was upset about was getting the same room I had on my last stay that was so far from the lobby. They said no other handicap room was available. But they gave us the use of a microwave and did not charge us. They found another chair for our use. We had 4 people and only 2 chairs:(.

United StatesSome areas were a little dated. Morning coffee in the room wasn't very good.
An exceptionally beautiful view of both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Good restaurant in the hotel. Nice area to walk around- Hilo Bay and Liliuokalani Gardens. Comfortable bed, very clean and friendly staff.

United StatesThe area felt a little unsafe though there was no incidents. The building next to this hotel is dilapidated and another building 2 doors down was boarded up but people still looked like they were living there. A very large homeless population, more so than other locations on the Big Island. They should provide more low income or shelters that are safe for them.
The room could definitely use a "refresh" but it was adequate. The view was wonderful. The location is a little away from downtown Hilo but that was fine.

GermanyThere was no safe in the room. The pool area is a bit overshadowed by the neighboring ruined hotel (which is not the fault of the Castle Hilo Hawaiin Hotel).
We had a room on the 4th floor with a view of the bay and Mauna Kea, which was beautiful. We were lucky and once saw the summit of Mauna Kea in a nice sunset and the second morning a cruise ship entered the harbor. We stayed for two nights to have easier access to Volcano National Park and that realyl helped because we could arrive there early when it opened and it was quite empty at the main highlights before the crowds came. Hilo also has a few nice attractions and places to see. Unfortunately the UNESCO Biosphere Center and the Tsunami Center were closed when we were there but we enjoyed the planetarium. We did not use the hotel's restaurants or food services, thus we cannot comment on it. Parking was rather easy, we always found a spot, despite the hotel beeing fully booked because of a convention.

United StatesThe furniture is starting to look dated and worn. No daily housekeeping so you have to ask for sundry items and occasionally leave your trash in the hallway.
Great location and view of Hilo bay and coconut island. Very spacious room and the A/C worked very well. Easy parking in the underground lot.

Northern Mariana IslandsHotel is definitely dated. Wall paper peeling off the wall. Sliding glass door not sliding or closing correctly. Very small bathtub. Toilet handle broken the first time to flush. It was fixed quickly. No USB ports. Furniture in the room was in good order. Refrigerator was rusted on the bottom so one support was missing so refrigerator tilted.
Bed was very comfortable and the view of the bay and mountains was gorgeous.

AustraliaRooms and fittings were probably 40 years in need of renovation. Housekeeping only every second day and as breakfast not included, you need to pay at property as there are no alternatives nearby. Waited one hour for an evening meal and it arrived very cold! Waiter not helpful and so I returned it to restaurant, but still paid in full.
Beautiful view across the lagoon and adjoining a very special Japanese garden.

United StatesThe ‘standard’ room we originally booked overlooked the broken down abandoned hotel next door so we were told we’d need to pay $35 extra to upgrade for a better view (We felt like we had to). The ice machine on our floor had been pulled out and a messy broken hole in the wall left behind. Although we couldn’t smell it, I am very sensitive to mold/mildew and so my sinuses were a bit upset but I expected that (since it’s Hawaii) so brought an air purifier so I could sleep.
Location is fantastic. On the water, next to the park. You can watch the kids jump into the ocean. Convenient to downtown and the Airport. Our ocean front room had a lovely view and the hotel, although not new, has a nice feel to it.

AustraliaMost of the staff were amazing, except young lady at the Front Desk who checked me out. I was horrified with her check out procedure. On checkout I asked her for my print out to double check the charges before she processed my card (not that I even I had to, do as its a standard). She handed me the receipt for me to sign, as she had processed my card. I pointed out I didnt want my card charged and I had actually asked for her a print out first. She went on to school me that I was getting my printout, and she didnt see what the issue was. I found myself apologising to her and over explaining myself, on something that was clearly her mistake. She did not apologise to me. I told her have had many experiences when other peoples tabs and charges were added to my bill. She rolled her eyes, pulled faces multiple times as I was explaining. I escalated the exchange to the Front Desk Manager who was amazing and handled my complaint well. It was a shame to end a beautiful stay this way, where other staff members were an absolute delight.
A very peaceful hotel in a great quiet location. Seaview room was lovely and room size was comfortable.
