It felt like home. It was true, quaint and traditionally Japanese ryokan experience. Upon check in we were greeted with tea and sweets, as well as a full overview provided by our hosts. It was very informative and made us feel right at home! The location was also great - right next to many frequented bus stops
Koyasan
Rooms feature tatami-mat flooring, comfortable futon bedding and paper sliding screens. They are fitted with an LCD TV and a safe. Bathroom facilities are shared, and the public baths are open 16:00-22:00 and 06:00-09:00 daily. I had so many expectations and Ekoin delivered everything. The temple itself is gorgeous, it is over 1.000 years, but so well kept, just impecable tatamis, garden, paintings, artwork. Also, it is so close to Okunoin cementery...i loved this part of town, so calm, feels like another time. The shared restrooms were a concern before getting there, but they ended up being one of the best of our entire trip - the bath is at the onsen, but is was ok for a day. Also, they provide a guide book to temple etiquette/schedules -just READ IT, do not go to morning service wearing yukata and do not arrive late. The monks are kind enough to let it go, but it is very disrespectful. The food is great, even though we are not vegetarians, we loved shojing ryori! And our favourite part was the morning service and the goma/fire ritual, do not miss it.

Everyone there was wonderful, willing to help even with the language barrier. The dinner and breakfast were delicious (if you stay more than one night, note that you'll eat the same dinner and breakfast) The room and all the temple was super clean and calm. It was a great place to stay! I really love the ceremonies that I could witness, meditation in the evening, morning ceremony and goma ceremony (fire ceremony). The one thing I was surprised by is that the showers are "Onsen Showers" so it's in a commun room, with little stools where you can clean yourself before entering the bath. Not a negative point, just something I wasn't expecting. Thanks to all the staff there for a wonderful stay!

The room is equipped with tatami floor and was super clean. There was no bed but instead futon was provided and you need to set it up by yourself at night which was interesting. It was a special experience to get a chance to sleep in a Japanese futon. If you don't know how to set it up they will help you too. The bathroom is big and equipments were new. The hotel is within 5 minutes walk to the beach. It's also close to a bus stop which takes you to surrounding sightseeing places. There are convenient store and supermarket within walking distance and you can buy fireworks there to play at the beach at night. The rental yukatas and hantens were the most stylish and unique compared to what guests at other ryokans were wearing. Location is excellent, close to train station and main street and onsens. Staff gave us an onsen pass for the 7 onsens in town. We also got a private booking at the bath in house. Staff provided an orientation to town and also provided excellent hospitality, including amazing food service. Rooms were traditional and a little old but comfortable and the bathroom had a Toto.
I would highly recommend Ryokan Tori to anyone travelling to Kyoto. The hosts were warm and friendly and extremely helpful in giving directions etc. Breakfast was delicious. The onsen and tea ceremony were the perfect balance of relaxing and educational. I was not sure if the futon bed would be comfortable to someone used to Western accommodation, but it was actually one of the most comfortable beds I slept in during my whole trip - including five star hotels, etc.
The ryokan's onsen was amazing, the staff was very welcoming and helpful, everything was provided and explained to us (yukatas, amenities, tea, crackers...). Location was also great, right next to bus station.
An authentic ryokan, in a building that's probably well over 100 years old. The rooms have tatami mats and futons and the onsen is beautiful. It's like staying in someone's home! This is not a super-swish modern hotel, so if that's what you want go elsewhere, but if you want a place with real character, staffed by people who treat you as long-lost friends, then this is the place for you. We will certainly return next time we're in Kyoto.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and spoke good English. Dinner and breakfast was served in our room and each item described to us as they were laid out. Our futons were laid out and packed away by staff. The whole ryokan was kept immaculate and we heard no noise at all. Geta, yukata, umbrellas and baskets were provided for going to and from onsens. An onsen pass was also provided from check in to 3pm on the day of check out. We were allowed to keep our towels until this point and our luggage was held after check out.
This Ryokan is located near several bus stops, perfect to sightsee Kyoto. The JR station is 10 min bus far away. The staff was very kind and warm as a real example of Japanese hospitality. This stay offers also several services like bike rental and onsen free tickets. The location was very relaxfull and quiet. Our room was equipped with tatami floor and futon beds. The room has several amenties, shower and bath tub. It has been a real japanese experience. We loved it!
It’s a stunning traditional style Ryokan with tatami floors in the bedrooms. Having the option to have a bed or a futon is nice, although I think a futon is actually comfier! Only 2 minutes from the train station and a stones throw from great coffee shops, restaurants and supermarkets. They allow you to book the private onsen for just under an hour, which allows mixed sex couples to enjoy it together, unlike the public onsens.
- almost everything - this hotel is directly at the beginning of the nara deer park. deer are literaly just outside your window. - stunning view at koufuku-ji temple - onsen directly in the hotel - nice staff - wonderfull tradinional room with tatami, futons and yukata - spotlessly clean - price - I would stay here again and I regret that I stayed only one night. I really enjoyed the evening, part of which I spent in my room
Our first stay in Japanese ryokan was a great expirience. Wood, tatami, futons, japanese garden, free yukatas, beautiful pottery made by famous Kyoto artist. Separated large bathtub and shower. Free tickets to Gin and Kin onsens! Arima is a very beautiful place!
