Surrounded by forest, tranquil Yamashinobu features public and private hot spring baths, an astronomical observatory and a piano. Some Japanese-style accommodations boast a private open-air hot spring bath. Free Wi-Fi and a choice of colourful free-use yukata robes are available. I travelled with my husband and 9 month old, and our stay was fantastic! We booked a private room, with dinner and breakfast included, and I'm so glad we did. The food was amazing, a great mix of Kumamoto local cuisine (basashi, and karashi renkon) with some wonderful Japanese staples (sashimi, soba and udon, miso soup). The staff were so kind to us, and when my daughter got a little fussy (tired) they would come by to make her smile and giggle. It was really appreciated. If you are traveling with a baby or young child I do think booking a private room as better, because the other outdoor onsens are great, but there isn't an area to change your baby when you get in and out of the bath, so it can be a little chilly. (Maybe more applicable to winter, spring-summer is probably fine).

Oku no yu was great! The staff picked us up from the bus station and dropped us off. The facilities had a public and many private onsens to try. The staff helped us set up our futons and there were yukatas for us in the room. We had breakfast there and it was very yummy. Overall, great experience and would recommend!
Very nice traditional ryokan with public bath and family bath. We had a private bath in our room, which we enjoyed a lot. Beds were comfortable, food was very nice. Other onsen can be visited in walking distance.
Accommodation with in-room onsen was superb. Meals were exceptional. Staff were very attentive. The ryokan onsen really felt like a traditional Japanese inn with comfortable modern ammenities. There were nooks and corners around the ryokan to sit and relax and laze around.
Loved the location. The host was very kind, with many kind gifts and attentions for the guests. We loved the discounted tickets for the Onsen closeby and all the advices on what to do on a rainy day on Aso. Everything is very clean. Futon beds were quite comfortable.
We really enjoyed staying at this traditional Ryokan. The breakfasts and dinners were traditional Japanese cuisine served by very respectful waitresses. Its well located for Mt Aso. We had our own private onsen which was an excellent way to end the day. We highly recommend staying at Aso Tsuruya
The cave onsen was a unique experience. They have private indoor n outdoor hot springs for booking. The English speaking female non-japanese staff was very friendly and pleasant. The ryokan also sent us to the bus stop when they learnt we are taking the bus to Hakata. Dinner was served around a fire place, giving a warm, fuzzy feel.
Loved how large and comfortable the rooms are and after days of tatami mats and futons, the Western style rooms here are a good change. The dinner buffet has a good spread and the food was good! Plenty of choice for all. Onsen was nice too.
The overall experience of staying in a ryokan with onsen, dinner and breakfast included and clothed on Japanese yukata give us taste of what it was like in a Japanese home. Upon our arrival, we were welcome with Japanese tea and dessert. It certainly sets the tone of our stay and warms our heart.
Super friendly and comfortable ryokan we stayed! I must say this is the ryokan have to stay in Aso! Although room without bathroom, but room comes with bigger space and basin and toilet! Our baby has so much fun to enjoy in tatami room, and also we enjoyed so many times in private onsen! Breakfast and dinner is delicious! I’d love to come back again!!
