We were only there I night and I had a very modern and what seemed like a newly renovated, albeit small single room, but my friend on the next floor said she had a very old-fashioned, shabby room. We did not find reception very helpful and I reported this as I checked out. So I find it difficult to write a reasonable review and it may not be fair as we were only there 1 night.

The dinner is a la carte and there are just 2 choices for each course. More options would have been nice. However, the food was very good (ice cream not the best though). Also, would be nice to get at least one smile from the receptionist. All in all, still a fantastic experience.

The location is great, the facilities in the room were great, awesome room design. Fabulous breakfast. The room exceeded my expectations. One of the very best and truly 4*. There was enough space, it was extremely clean, almost like new, the curtain blocks the light for a good sleep, it had an umbrella, shoehorn, plus a boiler with tea/instant coffee in the room. Only slippers would be missing, but overall, it exceeded my expectations.

See all above , no need to say more. I paid a fairly high price for such an old hotel with inside areas that clearly need an update. I didn't mind as I wanted the location to be close to the sea stage to see Rigoletto. However, next year, I will stay in a nearby small town, in a top notch hotel with friendly staff that makes me feel welcome and take a taxi to see the play. No more Messmer Hotel Bregenz.

I have travelled to many places and spent my dollars in nice hotels, however, I was surprised about two things. Arrival - reception. I tried to hand her my Booking.com copy and she just pushed it away and said "I do not need this, just your ID". After she checked us in, she handed me in an envelope one electronic key. I asked for a second key, her answer "you don't need it you are only one person". I told her to double check the booking, we are two people. She then produced a second key, turned over to her colleague and started a conversation (no," is there anything else you need etc....)". Then at check out. I had prepaid the room but reported one bottle of water from the bar to be paid and the city tax. I handed her a five Euro bill, she returned a few coins and the receipt, turned her back to me and started talking to somebody who just exited the office behind her. "No thank you, how was your stay...... no goodby". Well, this lady certainly would not be a receptionist in my hotel, that is for sure. Breakfast in the dining room - they need help to properly arrange plates and food etc so it is easier accessible and people do not have to return several time to very crowded areas to pick up something. The place setting had a knife a fork with napkin, but no spoon. I watched several people annoyed returning to the area with extra cutlery to pick up a spoon to eat their yoghurt or cereal. One young lady, obviously there to clear the tables stood totally lost for some time by one food area, she had no idea what she should do next. When she arrived at our table, we had three plates to clear, she only took one and walked away to probably place it with the dirty dishes near the kitchen, I did not pursue it further. Our room was clean, uncomfortable, with no place for the suit case, one upholstered chair, no little table or a stool in the bathroom to lay the clothes. It had a desk and a chair.

The bathroom is not very practical for various reasons which I would recommend the hotel to address: - the soap dispenser over the sink is placed quite far away on the wall and is difficult to access, making you splash water on the surface where you're supposed to place your beauty stuff (no additional support is available); - the hook for shower towels is placed behind the shower door, so it's impossible to access if you don't prepare your towel before entering the shower; - the "stick" on the floor for extra toilet paper rolls is placed where you're supposed to have your feet and is uncomfortable.

The renovated rooms are very fresh and cosy, with a nice corner for enjoying a drink/cup of tea arranged with fancy furniture. The lighting solutions are very good, with different combinations possible. The bed is very comfortable, although I would have preferred a single king mattress instead of two twin joined together.
