Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe Front staff were very dry, the amenities were quite dated, and our room was not the cleanest. The Futons were old and stained. Additionally Toilets were communal, and you had to leave your room to use them. In other Ryokans I've stayed in, the staff would set up your room and put out the futons, but this did not happen.
The Location was right near train and bus stations, the feel of the Ryokan felt very rustic, and the breakfast and dinner were incrediblely delicious. The Baths, both public and private, were good and warm.

United KingdomThe description of the room included 'shared bathroom'. There was a toilet with 3 cubicles on our floor, but the only shower we could use was in the onsen, next to the pool.
The location is superb - on a small main road near a bus stop; the river runs right by the hotel so lovely views; superb evening meal and breakfast; comfortable room with view over the river. There is a 'family' onsen which is private, and a large, stylish indoor communal onsen in a conservatory with lovely views.

NetherlandsThe room smelled like it had been smoked in. Wasn't overpowering, or to the point of not being able to breathe, but it was there.
The room faced the river so we could sleep with the sound of rushing water; very relaxing. The breakfast and dinners were delicious too. First time at a ryokan too and everything was helpfully explained.

United KingdomThis hotel was an interesting experience as traditional Japan but the price for one night was quite high considering what we received & if you only have one night there you get less than 24Hrs So I don't think I will choose this hotel next time.
As soon as you enter the hotel, you feel the amazing atmosphere of Traditional Japan. The rooms were amazing, a little worn but that didn't take away from the charm. The man who served our breakfast was very friendly and happily explained to us how to eat a Japanese Breakfast. In my opinion it was too big but was very delicious. It's 15-20 min to the train station.

ItalyThe female bath does not have a shower but it does have a big onsen.
The possibility to reserve and enjoy a private onsen, very rich and tasty Japanese dinner and the kindness of the staff. Also, a perfect position, if travelling by bus! Last but not least, the view from the room was amazing: we could see and hear the river passing through the rocks.

United StatesLocation was hard to get to. Hotel is definitely old - has both its charms and beauty as well as drawbacks.
Great value and amenities - perfect for a one night stay. Dinner and breakfast were great, but would be repetitive after one night. Great hot springs. Incredible value!

United Kingdom- Check in at 3pm with check out by 10am when you are only staying for one night felt quite rushed and not as good value for money at almost £200 for one person for less than 24hrs. - RE above, you also do not get to spend too much time in your private bath as it is open air and once it gets dark out bugs start to fly in. It is also not as private as you would hope when you open the window blinds, as there is another building with a path around the hill across from you, so people may be able to see in. - The futon was quite thin/hard, I would layer two if I stayed again.
- Beautiful old building in a peaceful and serene natural environment with traditional decor, felt like a Ghibli movie. - Room was large with a lovely seating area overlooking the river and complimentary green tea. - Good location, walking distance (10 minutes) to a town area with convenience stores, cafes, restaurants. Bus stops 2-4 minute walk from front door to Hakoneyumoto and Odawara stations as well as Owakudani volcanic area. - Shop by the lobby selling snacks and ramen till late, drinks vending machine. - Instruction manual included in English on how to use the baths, set up the futon bedding etc. - Privacy of in room bath was lovely and leisurely. - Breakfast was traditional and DELICIOUS.

Czech RepublicWe did not have toiled in our room and the toilet shoes were too small for me (my size is 46 EU). The lightning in the room was too sharp when you laid on the ground and were looking up, shaders on the bottom part of the light would be appreciated. The sink was very lowly positioned, so you basically sit while using it. The door between rooms and the light were quite low so I had to bow every time I moved between rooms (190cm tall). The styling of the rooms towards the hallway felt a bit kitschy and too decorative for us.
There were written English instructions for everything, including the breakfast and dinner menu. The ryokan seems to be used to accommodating non-japanese speaking people. Although we arrived 15 minutes after the latest check-in time because of the traffic problems, the host communicated on booking chat and accommodated us without problems and had dinner ready for us. They had large enough yukata size for me (190cm tall). Both dinner and breakfast had wide variety of meals, including sea-food, but also beef, pork and really good noodles. The breakfast comprised of (not only) freshly steamed vegetables and meat. Onsen baths were large there was a nice view of the river from the windows. The ryokan is ~60 meters from bus stop and ~200 meters from train station, which are quite close to Hakone-Yumoto, so it's easily reachable by public transport. Overall good experience and we enjoyed it.

United KingdomNothing major, but leaf tea on arrival would have made a better impression, also if someone had offered to help us (two women in their sixties) carry the bags up to the third floor.
The futon was very comfortable and I slept well, especially with the sound of the Haya River. Food also very good.

CanadaI didn’t like how low the sink in our room and how there’s no toilet in the rooms. But it is a heritage building and that’s how it is back then. It gives you a different experience and it’s not really a bad thing.
The place was strategically located near the bus stop and the train station. We had a beatiful room facing the river. The room is spacious, clean and well equipped with a mini fridge, safety box and hot water thermos dispenser, yukatas. There were oranges and hot water prepared when we arrived. I like that the washroom is clean. Also the private onsen for family members was great. I like the scheduled dinner and breakfast, everything was prepped when we arrived. Great customer service. Lots of food and all you can drink. I love how charming this old traditional ryokan. It is a very nice gem and well maintained. Especially, the Tonosawa train station near the ryokan. It’s super cute and hidden, with the red train and rustic surrounding, it will take you back in time. Book your stay here. They also have rooms with private onsen.

AustraliaI believe the hotel's service attitude is excellent. They kindly upgraded me to a room with a private hot spring, which greatly exceeded the value for money. The room, named "金時," was incredibly satisfying, from the scenic views to the meticulous details in its decor. The complimentary breakfast provided was both plentiful and delicious. It was truly an impressive journey:)

Location - within walking distance to the Hakone-Yumoto station. Also close to the bus stop (we took the bus from Odawara to the hotel and also from the hotel to Hakone Checkpoint). Food - Dinner and breakfast were amazing. Well prepared and served. Room and Onsen - we got upgraded to room with private onsen bath due to some ongoing renovation. Room was perfect and exactly what we look forward to experience - traditional ryokan and onsen. Staff - all lovely, respectful and accommodating.

SingaporeFamily bath only can book for half an hour (too short - one hour would be better). Besides, one of the window panel was broken and had not been replaced or repaired. When booking was made with booking.com we thought it was with attached bath but to our disappointment it was not. Booking.com should clearly highlight the difference between rooms with attached bath and those rooms without.
Traditional house with common baths (men and women) and family bath for rooms without attached private bath. Dinner was a good shabushabu (with beef and pork) and some traditional food.
