The friendliest atmosphere I've ever experienced in a hostel! You feel like part of one big family here. The staff is exceptionally kind, willing to help, and they organize many activities where you can get to know others really well. :) (Casino, karaoke…) A superb location for Initial D fans who want to explore Gunma. 🩷 Definitely follow their Instagram account @matoihostelbarjp to find out more about the events they organize. The staff are so sweet and friendly. It has a karaoke room, and it has a private and shared bathroom. There's also a kitchen area if you want to make your own food. Also, there's no curfew. Free shuttle service, just let them know when you want to use it, and they will drive you around.

The room with the beds is a bit narrow. There is a limited amount of space for movement between the wall and the beds. So grabbing stuff from your luggage might feel a bit awkward. While the beds themselves were fine, if you are a light sleeper, you might find some difficulty between the sound of other people and the mechanical lock.

Although we stayed for one night as a last minute decision, this place was surprisingly nice. They had a nice and spacious kitchen area, and the facilities in general were very pretty. The staff were friendly upon arrival, and check-in went smoothly. They also gave us a free drink ticket, but it was too bad we didn't have time to use it.

The hostel looks new, and it's big, which allows everything has more space to stretch out- kitchen and common area. Kitchen is equipped with almost everything (seems to not have coffee cups I noticed), so you are more than welcome to buy fresh stuff from the supermarket (5 mins walk) and cook there.

The owner and the staff are super friendly and kind! And though the hostel is not close to a train station, they have a free shuttle to/from the closest station. Food and drinks were also good!

The only down side is the location because the train station is a bit far (25 min walk is a lot when it's summer with 36C⁰ with just sun and no shadows) and not many buses per day. Be sure to check for transportation in advance:)

I can recommend Matoi Hostel to the fullest extent! The place is so very well organised and equipped it will be a pleasure for all different kinds of travellers. I arrived by bicycle as it is close to the Tone River Cycling Road. The rooms are very tidy and the kitchen is well equipped. Handouts and prints of the upcoming festivals/attractions are lying everywhere. The owner speaks English very well. But the best thing is the big café and restaurant area, where you'll surely have a great time. I immediately made some friends there. I left a few days for Kusatsu and the owner was happy to store my luggage in a secure cabinet until I return.

Overall, this place exceeded my expectation greatly. The host is very helpful, welcoming and friendly. We had to cancel some of the spots right before the stay, but the host sponsored the full amount refund. The entire hostel was very new and clean at the time we stayed. It is close to Haruna-yama too. The vibe is amazing. Many foreigners from all over the world joined the conversation at the bar during the night. The host speaks great English too and seems like she's learning other languages too. She and her husband helped us reserve a local restaurant (good taste at a low price), and the restaurant gave us ice cream for free for being the Hostel guest at Matoi! Additionally, we even had free drinks, cocktails! Trust me it is the best hostel you can find at this price in the surrounding area or even around entire Japan.

Absolutely everything. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Loads of entertainment options downstairs like a Nintendo Switch and Karaoke as well as a bar and restaurant. Staff was friendly and loads of fun, it’s obvious they care about the guests and they made the stay that much better.
