Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

JapanThis was my third time staying and I will return again. I really love the cooking which uses many dishes only found in this area. It’s a short walk to the start of the Haguro San stair walk so it’s ideal to stay here if you are planning to do the walk.

United KingdomIn winter though, the room is heated with a kerosene heater that produces a bit of smell / off-gassing inside the room and needs to be restarted through the night every 3 hours.
A short walk from mount from the amazing Mount Haguro hike, this is a very friendly quiet accommodation with excellent English spoken. It was snowing beautifully in February but the road was cleared well. Parking is right opposite the road. The food is excellent, with local touches, and a hot bath is running round the clock.

ItalyTamonkan is an amazing ryonkan. The sweet couple that manages it so so so kind and gentle. The rooms so cozy. We had an amazing experience. It’s perfect to reach Mount hagura. And it’s well connected with the main city. The food that they cooked for us was great too! I suggest to try breakfast and dinner. I really hope to come back again. Arigato! We love you ♥️♥️♥️

Germanythe smell of the (i guess kerosene) heater in the room needed getting used to. but this way of heating seems to be the norm in japanese guesthouses, so really just a minor thing!

IndiaA family-run place, Tamokan is basic but excellently located for those interested in visiting Mt.Haguro. The food was excellent, and we were amazed by their hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the owner was super helpful, too. The couple spoke English, there was no language barrier, and everything was smooth.

United KingdomIt was perfectly located for Mt hagaro climb and the hotel itself is amazing, the room was perfect and extremely clean. The owner (I believe he was the owner) was so kind and welcoming even though we can only speak very broken japanese. There are .ale and female baths at the property as well that I don't think are in the description. The food was fantastic and we are very sorry about the accident with the miso soup going all over the tatami floor, you were s .kind about it. The hotel is fantastic inside with walkways and incredible floors. It was so cheap for what was on offer......thank you

What a great find this place was. A very traditional Japanese guest house with ultra friendly and accommodating hosts. This property has been in their family for generations and they go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The meals were excellent and there was an English explanation for each dish served 😊. A big bonus is the short walk to the stairs to climb Mt Haguro. (Not that that makes the stairs any easier!) We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay here!

ThailandNothing! We spent 5 days in Shonai, with 4 of them at Tamonkan. Our only regret is not staying there the whole period we're in Shonai. We're definitely planning a longer stay next time. A few things to note (and I mention these not as complaints, but to help others in planning their stay): - You'll be sleeping on a traditional Futon. We had very restful and peaceful nights, but I understand that some may not be accustomed to this, so it's worth considering. - The hotel is quite far from the city, and the bus ride takes approximately 2 hours one way (There's a bus stop nearby). Taxi rides can cost around 9000-10000 JPY to reach the airport or the city, so renting a car, especially since Tamonkan offers parking, might be your best option. Toki-san was very helpful in arranging a taxi for us and providing more budget-friendly transportation alternatives to the resort.
I kept receiving recommendations for Tamonkan on Booking.com and Google Maps while searching for accommodation in Shonai. Despite being hesitant to book due to its distance from the airport and the specific location we needed for that weekend, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! Our stay at Tamonkan exceeded all expectations. It was our first experience staying at a Ryokan since we moved to Japan earlier this year. The place was exceptionally clean, and the food was simply amazing! The neighborhood was peaceful and quiet, and it was only a 10-minute walk to the entrance of Mt.Haguro, with cozy local shops where we could grab lunch and snacks. (By the way, I highly recommend booking a room with breakfast and dinner to save yourself the hassle.) I had concerns about the shared Sento, but even on busier days, I never had to share the bath with other in-house guests. It was a splendid experience, and we're already planning to stay at Tamonkan again the next time we visit Shonai.

FranceNo air conditioning: there are many fans around that keep the air circulating also at night but in hot and humid days it could be a bit annoying.

AustraliaTamonkan is the perfect place to stay near Mt Haguro and Mt Gassan (side note: the Dewa-Sezan trek over the three peaks exceeded expectations). Great location, comfortable accommodation, friendly and very helpful owners. Toki assisted with hiking information, bus schedules, arranging taxis, etc. Dinners and breakfasts over our two-night stay were all outstanding. Thank you Toki and Yuki for the excellent hospitality!

United StatesI enjoyed our stay immensely! I think if there are loud guests, it could be tough due to the old style house. However, everyone was respectful and the stay was quite enjoyable!
I enjoyed the location and general feel of Tamonkan. The rooms were comfortable and the host was incredibly friendly. The shower set up, yukata, and memories all felt aligned to a relaxing, simple stay. Breakfast was delicious as was the dinner though that did cost extra. If you rent a car, you have flexibility to choose other restaurants but I enjoyed the food at Tamonkan best.

This was one of my best stays in Japan so far. I loved the peaceful atmosphere of this traditional house, located at walking distance from Mount Haguro San. Yuki (hope it's written correctly) and her husband were so welcoming and kind that I was truly sad to leave. Yuki is also an excellent cook: for breakfast and dinner she prepared every time something different that was fresh, local and of the best quality. We really loved it! We also appreciated that in our room there was always water for tea and some treats. It was an amazing, relaxing stay. Thank you for having us!

United StatesVery nice traditional room. Staff was exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Breakfasts and dinners were fantastic. Nice location, between the main temple in town (definitely visit it, do its "circuit" between the sanctuary and exterior walls) and the start of the path up the mountain. Bus stop to/from Tsuruoka is 1 minute's walk away.
