The hotel was run with real care and attention to detail; the onsen was delightful, and very enjoyably relaxing; the room was comfortable and the meals were excellent. It was absolutely clear that the family running the hotel were committed to high standards and constantly wanted to assist in every way.

My only real complaint is that the food is average. We stayed at a lot of similar stays during our 3 weeks in Japan--a bunch of them offered the same types of meals. Unfortunately, the food here was probably our least favorite during our time in Japan. However, they brought in a violin player who was taking song requests while we ate, which was AWESOME! So overall, the dinner experience was still very special and we still loved our time here in Nara.

We had the best stay here, wish we could have stayed longer. We paid for the dinner and private onsen and honestly it was worth every penny. Staff are excellent and go above and beyond to make your stay amazing. Room is clean and spacious and it’s only a 10 minute walk from the deer park and train station.

Kaiseki wasn’t to our tastes but still nice, also the onsen opening times were very restrictive especially in the morning with an early check out time at 10am… leaves you very little time to enjoy the facilities Wakasa has to offer.

The location close to park and todaji temple, the staff greeted us before we even got to the door, greeted with a welcome drink and all bags taken to room. Then staff took us to our room and gave us an explanation on everything, very kind and attention to detail.

We had a great stay at the Wakasa Annex in December. I'd say it's a cross between a traditional Ryokan and a more modern style hotel. You don't eat in your room, but they do prepare the beds for you. The private onsen is worth the extra money and the staff are lovely. Lobby area is a bit dated but overall we had a great stay and would highly recommend. Food wasn't to our taste, but I'm sure those with a more refined palette will love!

Nothing at all

This stay was the highlight of our whole trip. The location was amazing. Short walk to the temple (they show you a short cut thats 8min) and 10 mins to Nara park. We got a room with a private bath but also booked the private cypress bath on the 4th floor for a small fee. Both were incredible. Definitely book with the kaiseki dinner/breakfast its so worth it!!! It was also cool they give you yukata to wear. 12/10 stay!

I just wish I could have stayed longer, there is so much to do in this location.

A very comfortable tatami-mat room with a deep full soak tub. The location in regards to Nara Park was fantastic and I had a wonderful view of Tōdai-ji in the mornings. Things were very quiet, the staff went above and beyond to make sure my stay was everything it could be including walking me through all the amenities they had to offer. They also provided local area maps with all the main attractions and let me know how best to navigate what I wanted to do which helped quite a bit with planning how I spent my time.

Especially the person who took us to our room and explained everything upon check-in and the person who ran after check-out to the bus stop to return our forgotten gloves! The traditional room was amazing and very spacious, with very clean facilities and a small balcony for a relaxing bath outside. The onsen upstairs was very clean and very inviting with exceptional facilities. The staff were amongst the most friedly people we met on our travels around Japan providing us with a guide on popular routes to explore around Nara and offering additional services such as taking a photo of us and a free gift bag. The traditional breakfast was incredible, providing us with a very memorable experience.

One of our favourite hotels in Japan. The room was spacious, had a spectacular view and a private hot tub on the balcony. The onsen was lovely (you could open the windows for fresh air). The location was fantastic but the star of the show was the food - amazing. The dinner was a multi-course treat with a superb menu in a private dining space. High quality fine dining experience. The staff were also exceptionally helpful.

There are 2 Wakasa, seems like there is a new Wakasa, and the building I stayed seemed a little old.
