“Breakfast by the river and the private baths were lovely”

  • Tatsuta Ryokan Review score: 9.1

“Amazing local food. One of the best we have had. I can’t eat raw food and the cooked version is just as amazing. Rooms are very comfortably. Ryokans have a system where u can check if they are availability for private use. The public ones are ok very basic.”

  • Onsen Yado Mizuguchi Review score: 8.2

    “Traditional Japanese home”

  • Shuzenji Onsen Hotel Takitei Review score: 6.7

“The view from the window was extraordinary as was the birdsong--orioles and bushwarblers singing their hearts out. The windows could be opened a few inches, fortunate since there was no cooling possible from the air system while we were using the room in April. The room was large enough for four, so the two of us had plenty of space to move around. But sleeping is Japanese style, on the floor, on not so thick mats. I double stacked ours and this was entirely adequate. Daily, new towels were left outside our door and left; no one seems to have come in. The beds were already made when we arrived and not serviced daily. There were elevators, fortunately. There were few other guests; the hotel was large and western style on the outside, built from concrete. There seem to be few western rooms.”

  • Sakahijiri gyokushoen Review score: 8.2

“Glad I read reviews after booking as they made me worried but it was actually a great place. It's an old school Japansese ryokan, yes it could do with some renovations but it wasn't smelly or dirty and I found the setup pleasant and enjoyable. We had the room with a spa on the patio which was amazing, food was really good though it is very Japanese so can be a bit much for those not used to it. Staff were very friendly and warm we really appreciated the service and kindness. Multiple onsens both private and public, nice outdoor rock baths very relaxing and quiet. In short if you like a classic, warm and comfy Japanese style ryokan then don't hesitate to book it's a lovely place.”

  • Hostel Knot Review score: 9.1

“The host was incredible! She helped us with a lot of local tips even got us a plan for the next day with the prices! She helped with our washing even came later to help us to get them dry. You have a phone to call for assistance if you need and I needed it as I forgot a pair of trainers. She came straight away. On the day we left we noticed she left us a super sweet note! Thank you so much!!! Comfy bed and quite private capsule hostel.”

  • Marukyu Ryokan Review score: 8.9

“Pretty much perfect. Excellent location just out of the main part of town but easy walking distance to everything, with access to the Sakura lined walking path along the river. Quiet, calm and peaceful and exactly as we would want a ryokan in a small and charming onsen town to be. Well prepared meals, friendly and attentive service from check in to check out”
