Located in the Japanese Alps, Hotel Associa Takayama Resort offers hot spring baths and rooms with mountain views and free Wi-Fi. The hotel features a sauna, massages and tennis courts.
“Breakfast at the hotel was worth it, great quality food and service, mix of western and Japanese foods. The hotel resort also has very nice public onsen as well as private ones that you can rent for reasonable price. We tried both the onsens (they rotate between men and women) as well as the private one. The private one you have a small bath for two to three, suitable for family or couples. The restaurant near the onsen is also much better value than the other restaurants. The cafe near the lobby is also nice to have. We learnt that you can also sent your luggage to and from the station so you dont have to carry it with you, especially if you plan to do some other things before taking the train.”

“First experience staying at a traditional ryokan, which is conveniently located near the Takayama train station. The hotel is in the Japanese style, including room furnishing. The staff is warm and welcoming, with most well versed in English. The property has first rate baths, both public and with the option to book a private bath. We opted for the traditional Japanese breakfast, which was amazing. The staff went out of their way to provide the highest standard of service. For instance, we needed to catch an early morning bus to a nearby destination and the morning staff arranged our breakfast earlier than the normal start time, but they did not want to see us start the day hungry. You are also given a traditional Japanese kimono as well as yukata/pajamas to wear. I would highly recommend this ryokan if you are visiting Takayama.”

“This Onsen was a highlight of our month in Japan. We were welcomed in the parking lot before we even entered the Royokan. We were then greeted in English and given all the info for making full use of the property. We scheduled a private hot spring bath and were very pleased with the amenities and decor. There was both an outdoor and indoor tub within the private area. The room was everything a Royokan should be with comfy futons. The food was truly amazing. Our dinner was served in a private tahtimi room. A soup server hung over the table and numerous dishes were served. We grilled our steak on habachis. A truly memorable experience! In the morning we went down for breakfast and were stunned to sit down for another incredible meal in the same setting. I highly recommend this place. I would love to take home that soup server! Lol”

Awarded by TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice in 2015, Wanosato offers luxurious Japanese-style ryokan stay in a 160-year-old quaint Gassho-zukuri thatched-roof house, nestled in the tranquil woods.
“This is the creme de la creme experience of the traditional Japanese hotspring resort. From the traditional fireplace where they welcome guests with hot tea; to the view of the river from your room which will leave you speechless; to a dedicated staff who are great with their English as well as their hospitality; to the delicious dining which seemed to go on forever. I stayed for one night of the Takayama Autumn Festival, so the price hiked up high, but this turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience of luxury that the money was well worth spending. Also, they organised a special shuttle to take guests to the night parade of the Takayama Festival, which was a nice touch to their immaculate service”

Situated in a tranquil area in Gifu Region, a 52-minute drive away from JR Takayama Station, Mozumo boasts a hot-spring bath and rooms decorated with modern Japanese interior.
“My stay at Mozumo was highly memorable. The private open air onsen facing the autumn coloured, mossy forest and mountains was one of the top experiences in Japan. Contemporary, clean and extremely peaceful. The only sounds were the trickling water of the onsen. I would recommend the Japanese breakfast which is served to you in your room. If you're staying in Takayama (which I would recommend) I woud definitely make the scenic bus trip to Mozumo. I arrived early and locked my bags at the station so I could do a nature hike in the mountains and try out Hirayu's public onsen and foot baths before checking into Mozumo. The staff are all female and there was an english speaking staff member who was very helpful! One note: If you haven't stayed in a Ryokan read up on how to wear your yukata and other etiquette beforehand”

Set amid a beautiful landscape in Okuhida Onsengo hot-spring area, Yamazatonoiori Soene offers beautiful rooms in a Japanese style with river or garden views.
“This ryokan is nestled in a valley. I recommend coming here in Winter. The mountain views are beautiful. - You can take public transport to get here. Only a few mins walk from the bus stop. If you're carrying a big luggage with you, the snow and ice on the road/pathway may give you a hard time. -Absolutely loved the staff! They were really friendly! -The room was pretty big with a nice view of the river and mountains. I went during winter time, it was snowing. Absolutely stunning! -The small snacks they provide on the kotatsu was very nice. -They even provide little baskets for you to put your towel and belongings in for your trip down to the onsens/showers. -The scenery was lovely at the onsen (both indoor and outdoor). - Both breakfast and dinner were lovely! - When we left the ryokan, they gave us... I think it was onigiri? . Which I thought was nice. Unfortunately I left it behind when we left in a hurry to catch the bus. Didn't get to taste it ): This ryokan is probably the best one I'm been to so far.”

Perfect for relaxing and enjoying the most traditional of Japan. Located in the heart of the Japanese Alps, the place offers you great views from either the room or a night of relaxation in its incredible outdoor onsens. The employees are super friendly. The day of check-in I am came very late, and even so they cooked me dinner, 10 points !. When I had to go I was late to take the bus, and to arrive in time they reached me in a van until the bus stop, incredible people!. To get there it is very easy, even if it does not look like it, You need go by train to Takayama or Mastumoto, which is closer.”

“The service was amazing. There were staff who spoke some English and they were all very hospitable. The rooms were extremely clean and the onsen was nice as well. I got both the traditional dinner and breakfast set and it was truly the authentic ryokan experience. The dinner consisted of all the hida specialities; beef, miso, salt-grilled fish and more. The breakfast as well offered was the traditional fare, and allowed you extra rice. The view from and the design of the place was extremely pleasing. Amenities were great; toilet and bath tub were super clean. They even had a tea pot for you to make tea. Overall, one of the best stays I've had.”
