“The room was very well equipped, the bed very comfortable, two different types of pillows, one soft and one hard were provided, free bottled water was provided, the room contained a wardrobe with two large drawers, another bedside set of two drawers and a desk area and chair, there were three mirrors, the TV was a good size but one or two channels were a little snowy and the bathroom was a good size for a single room with hot water, toilet paper, soap and a liquid soap or shampoo dispenser. I have travelled a lot and this room was very good for a single room and the best I have come across. I have read the other reviews and don't agree with the negative ones as the staff were friendly, the cleaning done as soon as I asked, the place kept clean and tidy and the manager helpful. There were mosquitoes in the room but I was never bitten so maybe Melakan mosquitoes don't bite? The internet was only slow on a few occasions and once I had to ask the management to restore the service as there provider had cut off the internet. Once this was done there were no other issues. I personally recommend the place as the price was good, the facilities excellent and the location close to all the main features of Melaka. Yonkers street is only a 10 minute walk away, the Malls are 5 minutes and there are local shops and a weekend night market in the street at the end of the Hotel's road. The Hotel is a good Hotel with helpful staff who have enough English to understand what you ask if you ask slowly so I never had any problems with communication. I had some difficulty locating the Hotel as I followed the map on the Booking.com website only to find there was no Hotel. I inquired with locals and eventually a five star hotel pointed me in the right direction. I was carrying a heavy bag so I was quite tired by the time I reached the Hotel. That is the only negative point I have to say and I mentioned the fault in the map to the management.”

The onsite restaurant was closed during our stay, but he would drive us to a floating jetty sea food restaurant for dinner, and even drop us back. For breakfast, coffee and tea were ready for us...with breadtoast and jam, by himself. The property is beautiful..their family holiday retreat, and each chalet looks interesting. We had an AC room with a nice view on the river. They have fan rooms as well. After a day walking through the city, you can get a drink next to the river (at the backside of the hostel).”

“This guesthouse is one of the best I've stayed in on my many travels around Asia. The owner Tim is super friendly, laid back and makes you feel at home in his home as soon as you set foot in the door. He is a great cook and a good conversationalist. You can sit and chat with him over a coffee about travels or politics, whatever! Every other review comments on the free breakfast and with good cause too. It was no doubt the best breakfasts i have been given at any Hostel/guesthouse worldwide (different everyday also!) Being in that part of Melaka and even in the guesthouse you can feel the history all around you. The houses are beautiful and date back many years. There are some very interesting and unusual items/antiques lying around all over the guesthouse from a cool 80s retro ghetto blaster (with an assortment of old tape cassettes), vinyl records mounted on the walls, old sowing machines and spinning threads. Theres also plenty of reading material and seating areas dotted around. It was such a nice vibe in this place and i could see everyone in the place was really relaxed, i wouldn't have left if i didn't have too. I was surprised when i got to my room as i had just booked a single bed in a male dorm and i was shown to a room with just 2 single beds inside. Tim the owner says a lot of people think they have booked the usual overcrowded dorm thing and are pleasantly surprised to find more space and privacy being that they are only twin rooms and also says its hard for booking.com to show this on their website. There was a little sun trap terrace on the top floor which was a nice surprise also and i was told their was ideas about putting some tables and chairs up there which would be really nice. All in all a great stay and a bargain. Cheers Tim :)”

“Coming to Bala's Place I was expecting a typical homestay environment, but what I got was two very fulfilling days staying at a quiet corner in Jonker's Street. Mr Bala was so friendly I probably can't even write it in words, he even offered a free upgrade to an air-con room for me and my friend. Travelling 8 hours from Singapore taking public transport was gruelling, but Mr Bala helped relieve some tiredness with his kind hospitality. There we got one of the cleanest toilets I have ever been to in Malaysia (no joke) and I met a few fellow travellers (backpackers :P), even became good friends with a Japanese man called Tomo. There was free water and drinks readily available for guests, and there were two minimarts just beside the place - which added to the superb location which avoided the bustle of the night market, yet was just only two turns away. I would recommend anyone on a tight budget to try out Bala's Place, I'm sure you won't be disappointed, just like I wasn't. 90 ringgit for 2 people (2 nights) bought me a cultural exchange, a lifetime experience and people I would never forget. Terima Kasih Mat Noh, Mr Bala, and the lady who kept the place so clean every day.”
